In an open letter published today and sent simultaneously to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Civic Forum call upon the European institutions to prevent the Polish government from dismantling the Rule of Law.
ECF President Jean-Marc Roirant wrote an open letter to Mr. Juncker, Mr. Timmermans (EC Vice-President in charge of Rule and Fundamental Rights), Mrs. Jourova (Commissioner for Justice), Mr. Moscovici (Commissioner for Financial and Economic Affairs) and Mr. Oettinger (Commissioner for Budget). He notably calls for a swift action to halt the dismantling of judiciary in Poland, where the PiS-led government intensified its attacks against the judges sitting in the Supreme Court.
A letter that comes from Polish organisations directly
By writing publicly to the Commission’s top officials, the ECF wants to raise the voice of Polish NGOs and citizens, who initially wrote the letter and sent it too. To this end, former President of Poland Lech Wałęsa, 120 civil society organizations, 97 artists and intellectuals, 17.000 Polish citizens as well as the European People’s Party call on the European Commission:
To launch an infringement procedure against the Law on the Supreme Court immediately before the Court of Justice, with the aim to stop the mass dismissal of judges which is set to take place in early July and which would be almost impossible to reverse later.
The ECF and all civic actors now hope that the College of Commissioners will launch an infringement procedure no later than on 12 June, during their next meeting planned in Strasbourg.
